Fighting Owl Q & A Homepage

Throughout the 2009-2010 Sport Seasons, the Citrus College Web-Site will feature Citrus College Student Athletes in a question and answer session about life as a Citrus College Athlete. This weeks feauture athlete is Angel Marti, sophomore Baseball player.

1. How long have you been playing baseball?
I’ve been playing since I was like three years old. My grandfather is the one that got me into it. My parents played, and my uncles all played, so it’s just something that I got brought up into.

2. How did you end up at Citrus?
It was actually a few of my friends who encouraged me to come here. My first year out of high school I went to Cal Poly Pomona and it didn’t really work out there. I really missed playing baseball, so Scott McKeen and Matt Hart told me they had a good program over here. I decided to give it a shot, and I’ve been here since.

3. How have you changed as an athlete and as a student since you’ve been at Citrus?
I’ve definitely matured a lot more since I got here, both in the classroom and on the baseball field. In schools it’s about getting after it and not being lazy, just doing your work. On the baseball field it’s about little things. Being a leader, stepping up when I have to, and being vocal every once in awhile. Most of all, it’s leading by example.

4. What are you majoring in?
In sociology. When I was at Cal Poly it was a sociology with an emphasis in criminology. I want to pursue a career in law enforcement.

5. What has been your favorite academic class you have taken so far her at Citrus?
Other than yoga, it has to be art history a class that I’m taking right now. It’s pretty interesting. I’ve never really been into art, but something about it just fascinates me. I like the stuff about the ancient Greeks and Romans. I don’t know; I like history a lot, and that all ties in with it.

6. Who are some of the people that have affected your life in a positive way here at Citrus?
The entire coaching staff: Coach Gomez, Viverto and Marcos [Aldrete]. All of my teammates too, especially the sophomores, because I’ve been with them for two years. McKeen and Hart too, because I’ve played with them since high school, and they’ve really helped push me.

7. What are some of your best memories so far playing for Citrus?
It has to be by far beating Rio Hondo in the playoffs. Playing Palomar in the regionals and all of the road trips have been pretty exciting too.

8. What is your favorite thing about going to Citrus?
It has to be baseball. If I came to Citrus just for school, it would be kind of like high school. Baseball puts it over the top.

9. Who has been the biggest influence in your life so far?
My grandparents. They have always been there for me, and always gone to all of my games. They are tough on me, but at the same time they’ve shown me all the love in the world. They are just the two greatest people that I’ve ever known.

10. If there was one thing that you could accomplish in the next year what would it be and why?
To continue to pursue my career, and keep growing as a person and a baseball player too.
