Glendora, CA (Women’s Basketball) -- The Citrus College Women’s Basketball team took on the Western State Conference South leader on Wednesday night and came away with a big win. The Owls gave visiting Bakersfield College a cool bri’ze as sophomore Brianna “Bri” Barfield scored a game high 18 points and grabbed a team high 12 rebounds in the 66-55 win.
The Owls came out of the gate hot on Wednesday scoring 11 of the first 13 points of the game. Sophomore Kristine Reyes started things off with a jumper at the top of the key, and sophomore Jasmine Cox put an exclamation point on it with a layup off an offensive board to make it 11-2.
Citrus’ lead would reach 12 points three different times over the next few minutes, but Bakersfield would eventually claw their way back into the contest. The Renegades would cut the lead to five points with 3:56 to go, but the Owls quickly answered with a three pointer from freshman Sarah Rebibo that put them back up by eight 30-22.
Bakersfield kept plugging away and eventually got the lead back to six points where it would stay at the break, with the Owls leading 38-32. Citrus shot a blazing 55.2% from the floor in the first half and kept Bakersfield to just 37.5% shooting. The Renegades were able to keep it close though, thanks in large part to their outrebounding Citrus 10-3 on the offensive glass.
In the second half, Citrus quickly pushed their lead back to double digits after a conventional three point play by sophomore Yvonne Sanchez. The Owls largest lead would be 20 points after a layup from freshman Kenya Thomas made it 55-35 with 11:17 left. From that point forward the Owls’ lead never dipped below double-digits as they went on to the 11 point victory.
Along with Barfield’s third double-double of the year, sophomore Julia Tani added 11 points and a team high four assists. Cox also had a standout performance with 10 rebounds, six points, two assists, three blocks, and a steal.
With the win, Citrus improves to 2-17 on the year and 2-2 in WSC South play. The Owls will hit the road this weekend as they take on West LA College. Tip-off is set for 5:00 PM.
