Culver City, CA (Women’s Basketball) -- The Citrus College Women’s Basketball team suffered a set back on Saturday night at West LA College. Looking to vault themselves back into first place in the WSC South race, the Owls instead found themselves trailing West LA again as the Wildcats dropped the Owls 75-63.
Citrus got into a hole from the get go, as West LA opened the game on a 9-2 run. The Owls finally got things rolling with a 7-1 run that pulled them to within a point after a layup from sophomore Jasmine Cox made it 10-9. Still West LA held on to their lead until Citrus tied the game up with just under nine minutes to play on a layup from freshman Kenya Thomas.
Moments later, the Owls had their first lead when freshman Sarah Rebibo drilled a three that made it 18-15 in favor of Citrus. Over the final eight minutes the lead would exchange hands three more times, with West LA wrestling the lead back from Citrus in the final minutes to take a 31-29 lead into the break.
In the second half it was all West LA. The Wildcats seemingly had an answer for every Citrus advance. The Owls would get the West LA lead down to a single point four times in the first 14 minutes, but each time West LA added back to their lead. Citrus’ last big move would come with 6:42 left when Rebibo hit another three pointer that made it 53-54. The Wildcats embarked on an 8-1 run shortly thereafter and the rest was history for the Owls.
In the loss, Citrus was led by sophomore Brianna Barfield who recorded her second straight double-double with 13 points and a team high 12 rebounds. Freshman Kenya Thomas added a team high 15 points, and sophomore Julia Tani chipped in 10 off the bench. With the loss, Citrus falls to 2-18 on the year and 2-3 in Western State Conference South Division play.
Citrus will be back at home for both games next week beginning on Wednesday when they host Santa Monica College. Tip-off is set for 5:00 PM.
