My Citrus Story: Chrisy Alcaraz

As if they are now, and later they shall be

I  have always been a good student, however, my family was poor and by my senior year at Charter Oak High School, I worried about my future. I saw no way for me to attend a four-year university and that was devastating. I was under the impression that not being able to afford a name-brand college would limit my ability to pursue my academic and career goals.

When I enrolled at Citrus College, I was surprised at the wide array of opportunities that awaited me. Almost immediately, the student employment center helped me get a job.
I discovered how supportive the faculty and staff were as they repeatedly extended help to me. I felt encouraged, inspired, and ultimately empowered. I became more involved on campus, joined the Honors Program, and became a Student Ambassador. My passion for singing led me to the Music Department where I served as co-president and student director for the Women’s Ensemble. In fact, I’ve been blessed to have so many mentors — all of whom recommended excellent activities, programs, and courses.

One of those mentors, Linda Merlo, encouraged me to apply for a variety of scholarships, one of which was the Miss Azusa Scholarship Pageant. With the title came much-needed money and another great opportunity to serve the school and the community. I competed in the Miss California Pageant and transferred to Pepperdine University, where I have been awarded $25,000 per semester in scholarships. Once a poor high school student with no clear way forward, I am now on my way to the university of my dreams and a future without limits.

Citrus College provided me with an excellent educational
experience. Its faculty and staff nurtured my confidence to attempt great things.
