My Citrus Story- Kasun Goonetilleke
As if we are now, and later we shall be.
I enrolled in Citrus College at age thirty, which was both frightening and embarrassing at the same time. I was frightened because I wasn’t sure if I would be able to handle the curriculum, and I was embarrassed because I was much older than the average freshman. Despite my lingering apprehensions, I took my placement tests and signed up for classes.
My first semester at Citrus was a test of my commitment to finish my education. I was very disappointed that I placed into the basic skills courses in mathematics and English because I thought I knew more. However, I decided that it was more important to lay a good foundation than it was to finish as quickly as I had hoped. That simple decision turned out be one of the best I could’ve made because it was the key that unlocked my future.
I graduated from Citrus as one of the Top One Hundred students, earning three A.A. degrees in liberal arts, behavioral science, and business. Along the way I also completed the Honors program, served as a senator in student government, and was the president of the Citrus Business Association. My life at Citrus was always more than simply taking classes. Through extracurricular activities, I learned the value of working with others to achieve common goals.
Now, at 33 years old, I am at UC Davis completing a B.A. in economics and sociology. It’s no exaggeration that my experiences at Citrus College changed my life. I’m far better off for having attended there.
I will always remember the wonderful people at Citrus
College, who taught, guided, and mentored me to help
ensure my success.
