My Citrus Story- Star Dominguez

As if they are now, and later they shall be.

During my last semester in high school I began doubting whether or not I was ready for college. For some time I had planned on becoming an aerospace engineer, but as I began to map out my future, I saw it wasn’t the field for me. The pressure to make a decision about my future was so great that rather than enroll in the college I had initially chosen, I elected to stay close to home, hoping to figure out what I really wanted to do.

I enrolled at Citrus College and began exploring a career in behavioral sciences. Even though it is a fascinating field of study, I found out working in the behavioral sciences field was not what I truly wanted to do for a living. I then shifted my focus to theatre arts. At the time I dabbled in that discipline with only one clear conviction: I didn’t want to pursue a career in science. A year later, I  discovered that becoming a registered nurse really excited me. I learned very quickly that if I wanted to realize that dream, I would have to earn top grades in all my science courses. I studied more diligently than ever. I was concerned about taking multiple science courses in a single semester, but by this time I had established solid study habits, so I simply pressed forward. By the end of the school year, I made both the Dean’s List and the President’s List and was recognized for academic excellence in chemistry. In addition, I became a Citrus (STEM) program Supplemental Instruction leader for the Biology 200 Human Anatomy course — a wonderful honor.

Certainly, I did my part in achieving academic success, but there’s a lot of credit to share. There were many professors who helped me along the way – not only with excellent instruction, but also wise counsel. I also took advantage of the great network of student support services. Looking back I see how everyone helped inspire and keep me on track, even as my career goals shifted. This cooperative effort helped me make incredible progress toward my goal in a very short period of time.

I am grateful to all those at Citrus who helped me envision an exciting future and realize my goals.
